Indian Head Massage

It is believed that Indian Head Massage, which is based on old Ayurvedic techniques, has been practised as part of everyday grooming in India for centuries (up to 5000 years). It has also played a part in Indian rituals and weddings. People in India can receive an Indian Head Massage from the local barber when getting their hair cut. It is also often seen being barber when getting their hair cut. It is also often seen being Indian women traditionally practiced Indian Head Massage to keep their  long hair looking shiny and healthy. It also helped to maintain its condition. They used oils such as Sesame and Coconut to keep it looking healthy. Indian Head Massage is known in India as Champissage, which is the Indian word for precise massage.

The therapy was brought to the West in the 1970's by Narendra Mehta who was blind from the age of one.
When Narendra brought Indian Head Massage to the
West the routine was extended to include the shoulders, sometimes the upper arms, the face, ears and neck. He did this when he was training to be a physiotherapist and learnt more about how the body works.
Indian Head Massage has grown in popularity. One of the reasons may be because it can be given to someone wearing clothes so is ideal for the workplace.

What Does an Indian Head Massage Involve?

Indian Head Massage starts with the client sitting in a chair (which must have a low back), to receive their massage.
The treatment works on their head, scalp, neck, shoulders, upper arms and face. It involves massage, Shiatsu ('Shi' meaning finger and 'atsu' meaning pressure) and acupressure techniques. These work to rebalance the area and eradicate negative energy. The aim of the treatment is for the client to become more relaxed and to enjoy improved mental clarity and concentration. Each treatment usually lasts for between 20-30 minutes. However, it can be given for longer if required.
Most clients do not get any side effects but they can be sleepy afterwards. Sometimes they can get headaches initially after a treatment but these soon subside leaving them feeling relaxed and less stressed, and certainly better than prior to their treatment.
As with all massage treatments the client will be encouraged to drink water after treatment. This is to aid the release and clearing of toxins and to re-hydrate them if needed.
